Element

A pure substance made of only one type of atom.

Atom

The smallest particle of an element.

Molecule

Two or more atoms joined together.

Compound

Two or more elements joined together. A compound’s properties are different from the elements it is made from.

Mixture

Two or more substances mixed together but not joined. Mixtures can be separated physically.

Properties

The characteristics of a substance (for example: colour, strength, melting point, conductivity).

Symbol

One or two letters that represent an element.

Periodic Table

A table of all known elements. Elements are ordered by their atomic number and arranged into groups and periods.

Groups

The vertical columns in the Periodic Table. Elements in the same group have similar properties.

Chromatography

A method used to separate the substances in a mixture of dyes/inks.

Filtration

A method used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
